The key to successful bespoke software is your choice of partner.
Assess their track record - if the partner you are considering can
demonstrate a successful track record in bespoke software delivery,
then they are a good candidate.
Their technical accreditation - if your potential partner has technical
accreditation then they are unlikely to be software cowboys.
Their standards (technical and non-technical) - do they have an independently
audited quality accreditation? Can they demonstrate their business integrity
and values?
Their financial standing - are they going to be here tomorrow?
How their people relate to you - can they discuss complex technical issues in
a way you understand? Do you trust them? Do you get on with them? (Problems
happen,
solving them can often depend on the strength of your relationship).
How their people relate to your business - do they understand your key objectives?
Do they understand your culture? Can they add value by suggesting improvements?
Consider
What service level agreements are promised?
How realistic is the development timetable?
How realistic are the claims for support response times?
What penalties are acceptable? A useful means of assessing the accuracy
of responses to the above items is to establish penalty terms for failing
to deliver - how flexible is your partner?
Who will own the source code?
If you own the source code then you are fully protected. Your supplier
is not guaranteed your continued business and you are able to continue
to have your software supported if your original partner disappears
from the scene.
Is there a market for the end solution?
By owning the software source, you may be gaining a valuable asset
for your business. By allowing your supplier to sell your software
under licence you have the potential to create an additional revenue
stream with the minimum of effort.
Can your partner exploit that market?
Does your partner have a track record exploiting bespoke software as
a package to the mutual benefit of you, them and the buyer?
KIM offer a track record that we believe is second to none in bespoke
development.
We believe our client list and customer feedback speaks for itself
in respect of functional content, ease of use, and easy to work with.
Our technical accreditation reflects what we do - we only develop with
Microsoft and Oracle tools. We are experts in what we do, and we do
not claim to be experts in areas we do not know - we don't use contractors
and we don't outsource.
Our BS EN ISO9000:2001 quality accreditation combined with our ongoing
commitment to ITIL (best practice) proves our commitment to delivering
quality in all our dealings, whether this be with clients or suppliers.
Our history shows we have been around for a long time. All our directors
have successfully managed software companies through boom and bust
and our resilience during IT downturns is there to see in our accounts.
Our people - call us in for a meeting to discuss
your requirements and judge for yourselves!

"If I can do it, anyone can do it. The system is still in its infancy here
but we have confidence in what we've seen that the things we haven't seen yet
will all run fairly smoothly."
